Narrative
An approaching subject in today’s modern age is the exponentially accelerating urbanization of the world. Statistics show that by the year 2030, nearly 60 – 67% of the world will be urbanized. People are beginning to study the effects of urbanization on all aspects of life, including the influence it has on humans. One fairly new study examined the effects of living in an urban city. It showed that living in urban cities is linked to mental illnesses, such as schizophrenia, due to dealing with daily social stresses. The longer you live in an urban city, whether or not you were born in an urban city, and how urban a city is all influenced the results of the study – people who lived longer in a city or lived in a more urban city showed higher levels of attentiveness to stressful situations.
The monotony of daily routines can cause humans to become lost in the vast nothingness of everyday life. The spaces in which humans are active and with which they have to interact have an impact on their outlook on life: a depressing space yields depressing human moods and attitudes. Of course, there is always the case that depression or stress, coming from a chemical unbalance or trauma, can suddenly occur to one’s life. Whatever the case, architecture and landscape can be the answer to help revive those who are experiencing psychological distress and find peace with themselves. The proposed project will address fundamentals of architecture and landscape in which researchers, psychologists, and environmentalists have discovered to be calming. These include comforting elements of form, material, light, and color. An architectural design that emphasizes the appropriate setting of these combined elements should improve human nature and, therefore, ultimately improve the qualities of community, human interaction, and spirituality, and contribute to a greater satisfaction of life.

narrative [1 page]
In the Mid-20th Century, Dryades Street was the second largest commercial corridor in New Orleans. Serving African-Americans and Immigrants prohibited from shopping on Canal Street, over 200 mostly Jewish owned stores lined Dryades until the Civil Rights movement swiftly drove commercial activity away. Despite the recent emergence of non-profit organizations, the renamed OC Haley Boulevard must engage the for-profit sector to fully recover from decades of disenfranchisement. Creative and digital media incentives in the city as well as the boom of local entrepreneurship are fantastic post-Katrina developments, but lack permanence. Incubating creative media along OC Haley Boulevard provides resources and low barriers to entry otherwise nonexistent, in a commercially zoned area with walking access to the Central Business District. Designing flexible space, defined by the fixed program elements critical for an incubator will help create communal excitement and shared sense of accomplishment and camaraderie. It also challenges the architect to think about new ways to consider how people use office and flex space, both as methods of isolation and concentration, but also with an open, interdisciplinary feel. Developing a rhythmic language between program elements essential in an incubator will not only promote creativity, but also answer to the call of young entrepreneurs who are excited by scintillating architectural space. Design will be called upon to bridge the gap between commercial and community, as a means of catalyzing redevelopment across OC Haley Boulevard and returning the street to its former glory.

thesis title: Sensing Architecture: Individual experience & Collective Memory
Phenomenology, with its focus on the individual, is limited in its application to architectural experience. Using similar techniques, architecture can affect the collective memory and create meaning of place.
